Risk management

Event: Risk management

Risk management facilitates management’s ability to effectively manage the organisation’s risk and to create sustainable value and communicate this value to its stakeholders through capital growth (ie. share value) and increased dividend stream (ie. income). No organisation operates in a risk-free environment, and enterprise risk management does not create such an environment. Rather, organisations operate in environments filled with uncertainty, requiring proactive action to manage risks to survive.

With the continuing trend of corporate disasters such as Enron, WorldCom, Lehmann Brothers, etc, organisation’s board members and executive management have realised the impact of ineffective risk management. Managing risks and opportunities is a key strategic activity for organisations to be successful. Why has risk management failed to protect these organisations from collapse? Enron and Lehmann Brothers received awards for its risk management, yet they failed.

So the question to ask is risk management art, science or witchcraft?

This ACCA presentation will try to answer this question.
