Media invitation - companies awarded for taking sustainability to the next level

The ASX50 are putting sustainability reporting at the top of the agenda and boosting efforts to address their corporate, social and environmental responsibilities, says the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The comment comes ahead of ACCA’s annual Sustainability Reporting Awards and Conference, to be held Tuesday 4 August 2009 at The Westin, Sydney.

“ACCA has received an overwhelming response for this year’s Sustainability Reporting Awards, with a 54 per cent increase in entrants compared to last year including more than half of the ASX50,” says Michaela Campbell, Head of Australia and New Zealand, ACCA.

Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise organisational excellence in environmental, social and sustainability financial reporting. Companies are judged based on transparency in their reporting and how well they communicate their corporate performance with stakeholders.

“The global economic downturn has prompted Australian organisations to take sustainable reporting beyond environment; and assess how risk management and ethical investment affect work practices.

“There is a real opportunity for organisations to promote ethical standards, increase accountability with stakeholders and strengthen companies for the future through effective sustainable reporting,” says Campbell.

The Awards are judged by a panel which includes Professor Carol Adams from La Trobe University, Professor Craig Deegan from RMIT University, Dr Ian Woods from AMP Capital, Chris Shulz from Allens Arthur Robinson, Francis Grey from SAM Group, Simon O’Connor from the Australian Conservation Foundation and Lyn Mayes from the NZ Council for Socially Responsible Investment.

Award winners will be announced at 12:30pm, Tuesday 4 August 2009
